Being consequential about restorative justice

Walgrave, Lode

Omschrijving

Selected papers by Lode Walgrave that have been published in the late 1990s, 2000s and 2010s on the relationship between restorative practices and the criminal and juvenile justice system. In this anthology, Professor Emeritus Lode Walgrave, a pioneer in the field of juvenile justice and restorative justice, revisits a selection of his publications, going back to the late 1990s to the late 2010s, on restorative justice as a response to offending. These include reflections on why restorative justice is valuable as well as on how it can and should be implemented. Can reparation be imposed and how would that relate to retribution? Is there room for punishment? The broader field is explored by examining how restorative justice contributes to civilising criminal justice and to a ‘criminology of trust’, all based on his socio-ethical concept of ‘common self-interest’. In newly written introductory and concluding chapters, Walgrave explains how this journey in writing resulted in developing a consequential approach to restorative justice, which prioritises restorative responses to crime and delinquency. About the series; Acknowledgement; Introduction – an exploratory journey towards a consequential restorative justice; Restorative Justice in Comparison; What Is at Stake in Restorative Justice for Juveniles; Restoration in Youth Justice; How Pure Can a Maximalist Approach to Restorative Justice Remain? – Or Can a Purist Model of Restorative Justice Become Maximalist?; Imposing Restoration Instead of Inflicting Pain – Reflections on the Judicial Reaction to Crime; Retributivism and the Quality of Social Life – A reply to Antony Duff; Integrating criminal justice and restorative justice; From civilising punishment to civilising criminal justice – From punishment to restoration; Restorative Justice is not a panacea against all social evils; Emotional Dynamics in Restorative Conferences; When restorative justice meets the Good Lives Model: Contributing to a criminology of trust; The need for clarity about restorative justice conferences; Domestic terrorism: a challenge for restorative justice; Criminology, as I see it ideally; Positive criminology, criminology of trust and restorative justice; Conclusion – Consequential restorative justice in conversation with its critics
